Puerto Velero is a well known spot about half an hours drive from Barranquilla and 15 minutes from Santa Veroncia. On paper it might look attractive with both flat water, waves and very strong wind. But its NOT a good place to kitesurf.
The wind is horribly gusty and it’s “offshore” from the beach inside the bay. Not particularly good for beginners either as it’s very muddy bottom so not great to put down your feet.
Many Colombians go here to learn as it’s got some of the oldest kiteschools in the pacific coast of Colombia.
It’s used as a starting-point for downwinders to Santa Veronica, if you go on one one these. Launch your kite fast and get moving away from the beach. Due to the strong gust it’s a dangerous spot to loose control of your kite. And you have less than five meters between the water and the restaurant shacks you don’t want to crash your kite into. The wind is more stable further out so get moving as soon as you have your kite up.
Waves
If you can kite from the outside of the bay, directly into very nice waves. This is for experienced kitesurfers only.
